Overview
If you’re at all interested, this piece is about who I am and what the purpose of this whole venture is for me.
Who are you and what are you doing?
Hi, I’m Ashleigh. And honestly? Who the fuck knows!
About me
I’m a 30-something ridiculously busy human. I am a wife, a mum, an academic, and a creative. I like to keep myself busy with lots of different pursuits, and this space is my latest venture.
I consider myself to be an ‘alternative’ person. I am what the cool kids call an ‘elder emo’. I was a teenager during the 2000s emo/scene kid era, and you best believe I fully leaned into that life. I still dress in dark colours, have tattoos and piercings, and I live in doc martens, I even wore them on my wedding day! I am drawn to aesthetics that might be labelled ‘dark’, ‘moody’, ‘dramatic’, ‘romantic’. And even though I have a love of all things gothic, witchy, and vampy, I am also an admirer of the lighter things in life like animated films, sparkly things, and baking.
I am honest, loyal, sensitive, and wear my heart on my sleeve, so this is a place where you will find authenticity. I am the kind of person who talks openly about life, including the amazing, the not so amazing, and the downright ugly. There are values in life that are non-negotiables for me, and I will not hide those parts of myself. I fully believe in human rights for everyone. This is 100% a safe space for people who are usually completely shat on by society, and if you are one of the people that put down minority groups, then fuck off, you are not welcome here.
About my life
My home life – although busy – is pretty chill. I live with my husband and our one-year-old son, my-in-laws, and our three cats. I work full-time and my husband is essentially a full-time dad, and works on his own stuff around our son. My day-to-day life is probably really boring from the outside looking in. I get up, spend time with my son, head to my desk (either at home or on campus), crack on with academic work for the day, sign off, have dinner with my family, chill out, and go to bed. I want to be one of those superhuman people who also manage to fit in extensive self-care routines, gym sessions, meal prep, hyper-organisation, top quality days out (you know exactly the people I’m talking about and we all strive to be), but she’s just not me. I am not her, and that’s okay. You know what? Life is fucking hard, and if predictability and boring days help us get through, then why not?
I currently work full-time as a lecturer in psychology with a focus on forensic perspectives. A much less boring (and very oversimplified) way of saying that is my field of study is using psychology to understand crime. I’m also doing a PhD in forensic psychology, and the topic of my thesis is a huge passion of mine!
While I love learning, researching, teaching (anything academic basically), I am a creative at heart. I always wanted to pursue something artistic, but was never brave enough to do it. The majority of my hobbies would be considered ‘creative’, like crochet, music, art, crafting, and writing, and being able to make a living out of leaning into this side of me would be a genuine dream come true for me. I never really considered myself to actually be creative though. I’ve always been drawn to creative things, but just assumed I wasn’t actually any good at it. My husband, however, is frequently telling me how creative I am, how I see things that other people don’t, and how I have a knack for picking up new things quickly. With his support, I’ve decided to take the plunge and try to make something of my creativity. After all, I’d rather regret doing something than spend the rest of my life wishing I’d tried. So, I guess that leads me onto…
…Ashleigh, what the hell are you doing?
Great question! As I said, I’m already pretty busy spinning lots of different plates and identities, so why not take on another one? I’ve decided it’s time to follow a real passion of mine – interior design. But not in the typical sense, I guess you could say. I’m not interested in creating perfectly styled spaces that look beautiful. A home that looks good in pictures is not my goal. Instead, I am interested in creating spaces that feel good and are functional. Of course, we want them to look nice too, but it’s not the main purpose of what I’m doing here, it’s a happy side effect of the bigger picture.
The point of this space is to help people to find ways to have a home that they love, that works for them, and that they can actually maintain. Forget the organisation ‘hacks’, reject the status quo, stop trying to meet other people’s expectations and let’s create a home that works with who you are. If you need to keep your medication next to your kettle so you remember to take it in the morning, great, let’s include that in the design! If we need to put ‘dump’ baskets in each room so you can do a quick, no-thinking tidy up at the end of the day and stop your home from becoming chaotic, cool, I’ve got you. The entire purpose of my guidance is to help you achieve that feeling of walking into your home, taking a deep breath, and relaxing. Having a background in psychology is super helpful here, because I have a good understanding of ‘what works’ when trying to create habits and feel-good spaces.
On top of the design blogs, portfolios, advice, guidance, whatever, I’m also going to be sharing blogs that are more personal and could potentially even be considered ‘lifestyle’ blogs. These will probably consist mostly of my ramblings about various things that are happening, or new discoveries that I’ve made that have helped me to do life a little bit better. Having a feel-good home goes deeper than décor, so I’m sharing personal things about my life to offer further guidance.
Ultimately, I just want a place where I can be creative, and share home styling, design, and organisation ideas that help people who need it most; I will be super happy if I can help even one person. The ideas that are shared here will be centred around people who struggle to make their home work for them because of things outside of their control. So, if you’re busy parents, juggling a thousand different things, autistic, ADHD, just can’t be bothered to get shit done, or basically anything else that makes having a nice home fucking hard, I’m here to help you!
And there you go, I’ve written my first blog post!
Thank you for reading.
And if you read all of it…
…then gold star for you!
I guess I just go on to the actual stuff now then, huh? Speak soon x
